Zakat on Gold, Crypto and Trading Accounts: A Simple Guide
How is zakat calculated on gold, crypto and trading money?
Add up the value of the gold, crypto and trading-account money you own on your zakat date. If the total reaches the nisab (the value of 85 grams of gold) and you have held that wealth for a full lunar year, zakat is 2.5% of the total. Always use today's value, not what you paid.
That is the whole method in one line. The rest of this guide explains each part with simple numbers, shows where the schools of Islamic law differ, and covers the questions traders ask most: jewellery, stablecoins, open positions and money sitting in a broker account. If you just want the number, the gold zakat calculator and the crypto zakat calculator do the arithmetic at live prices.
What are nisab and haul?
Two conditions decide whether zakat is due on your wealth at all.
- Nisab: the minimum amount of wealth before zakat applies. Most zakat authorities use the value of 85 grams of pure gold. Some scholars prefer the silver nisab of 595 grams of silver for cash savings, because it is lower and so helps more people in need. Your authority will tell you which one it uses.
- Haul: one full lunar (Hijri) year of about 354 days. Zakat is due when your wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for that year. The schools differ on whether it must stay above the nisab every day of the year or only at its start and end.
- Rate: 2.5% of the zakatable wealth for a lunar year.
Because the nisab is tied to gold, its value in your currency moves with the live gold price. When gold rises, the nisab rises with it, so check it on your zakat date rather than using last year's figure.
How to calculate zakat on gold
Zakat on gold is based on the pure gold inside it. Most jewellery and many bars are not 100% gold, so first convert the weight to pure gold.

- Step 1: weigh each item in grams.
- Step 2: multiply by its purity. 24K (999) is almost pure gold, 22K (916) is 91.6% gold and 18K (750) is 75% gold.
- Step 3: multiply the pure grams by the gold price per gram on your zakat date.
- Step 4: if the pure gold is 85 grams or more, zakat is 2.5% of that value.
Here is a worked example with round numbers. Say you keep 120 grams of 22K gold in a safe, and gold is worth $100 a gram (a made-up figure for the example). Your pure gold is 120 × 0.916 = 109.92 grams, which is above the 85-gram nisab. Its value is 109.92 × $100 = $10,992. Zakat is $10,992 × 2.5% = $274.80. You can also pay it in gold: 109.92 × 2.5% = about 2.75 grams.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery you wear?
This is where the schools differ most. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools do not require zakat on permissible jewellery that you wear in a normal, customary amount. The Hanafi school requires zakat on it like any other gold. Everyone agrees that gold kept as savings or investment, such as bars, coins and jewellery you do not wear, is zakatable in full.
In Malaysia, each state zakat authority sets a customary limit called uruf. Worn jewellery up to that limit is exempt, and only the value above it is zakatable. The gold calculator has a field for this allowance. If your authority does not use one, leave it at zero so all worn gold is counted.
How to calculate zakat on crypto
Where scholars and zakat bodies accept holding crypto, they usually treat it like savings or trade goods. Some zakat authorities, such as the one in Selangor, classify crypto as property with value, so zakat is due on it once the nisab and haul are met. Others take a different view of crypto itself, so check the position of your own authority first.
The method is simple: units held × price on your zakat date × 2.5%. Say you have held 0.5 Bitcoin for a full lunar year, and on your zakat date one Bitcoin is worth $60,000 (again a made-up figure). Your holding is worth $30,000, which is above the nisab, so zakat is $750. Use the live Bitcoin price or your exchange's price on that day, not the price you bought at. Coins that fell in value are counted at their lower value.
Zakat on a forex or trading account
Money in a trading account is still your money, so many scholars treat it like cash savings. Whether trading forex is permissible in the first place is a separate question with different views; our neutral explainer on whether forex trading is halal covers the main positions and does not give a ruling. If you hold an account, these points help you value it on your zakat date:
- Count what you could withdraw: use the account equity, the balance plus or minus the profit or loss on open trades, as if you closed everything that day.
- Leave out bonus credit: a promotional credit you cannot withdraw is not really your money. Ask your authority how to treat it.
- A gold CFD is not gold: a buy position on XAU/USD through a broker is a contract, not metal you own, so it is counted through the account value, not as gold by weight. Our guide on how gold trading works explains the difference.
- Convert the currency: if the account is in US dollars and your zakat authority works in another currency, use a currency converter with the rate on your zakat date.
Muslim traders often ask for swap-free accounts, which remove the overnight swap fees that some scholars see as interest. Terms vary a lot between firms, so read them carefully when you compare regulated brokers.
Add everything up on one zakat date
The nisab applies to all your zakatable wealth together, not to each asset on its own. Most people pick one zakat date each year and value everything on that day.

Example: on your zakat date you have $3,000 in the bank, $4,000 of equity in a trading account and $2,000 in crypto. None of these alone reaches a nisab of $8,500 (85 grams at $100 a gram), but together they make $9,000. Zakat is due on the total: $9,000 × 2.5% = $225. Many authorities let you subtract debts that are due now, such as a bill you must pay this month. Rules for long-term loans, like a home loan, differ between scholars.
Lunar year or Gregorian year: 2.5% or 2.577%?
The 2.5% rate belongs to the lunar year of about 354 days. A Gregorian year is about 11 days longer, so some authorities let you count by the Gregorian calendar and use 2.577% to make up the difference. Both calculators offer this option. Pick one method and keep using it, so your zakat years do not overlap or leave gaps.
Common zakat mistakes to avoid
- Using the purchase price: zakat uses the value on your zakat date, not what you paid.
- Checking each asset alone: small amounts of cash, gold and crypto can reach the nisab together.
- Forgetting purity: 100 grams of 18K jewellery holds only 75 grams of pure gold.
- Counting gold CFDs as physical gold: count the trading account's equity instead.
- Using last year's nisab: it moves with the gold price.
This guide explains how zakat is commonly worked out; it is not a religious ruling. Nisab figures, jewellery limits and the treatment of crypto and trading accounts differ between schools and zakat authorities, so confirm the details with your local zakat authority or a qualified scholar before you pay. The prices in the examples are made up. Trading forex, gold and crypto with leverage carries a high risk of losing money, so only trade with money you can afford to lose.
FAQ
Can I pay zakat early or in monthly instalments?
Many zakat authorities accept advance payment, including monthly instalments or salary deductions through an employer. On your zakat date you still work out the full amount due and pay any balance that remains. If you paid more than was due, the extra counts as voluntary charity. Ask your authority how it records instalments.
Is zakat due on stablecoins like USDT?
Stablecoins track a currency such as the US dollar, so where crypto holdings are accepted they are usually treated like the cash they follow. Count their value on your zakat date together with your other wealth, then apply the nisab and the 2.5% rate. Confirm the position of your zakat authority, because views on crypto differ.
Do trading losses during the year reduce my zakat?
Zakat is worked out on what you own on your zakat date, so money lost during the year is simply no longer counted. If losses take your total wealth below the nisab, zakat is not due that year. Some schools restart the year when wealth drops below the nisab in between, so ask your authority.
Does paying zakat reduce my income tax?
In some countries it does. In Malaysia, zakat paid to a state zakat authority can give an income tax rebate, and in Indonesia zakat paid through an official body can be deducted from taxable income. Rules and limits change, so keep your receipts and check the current tax rules where you live.
