USD/CNH is the US dollar against the offshore Chinese yuan, the version of the renminbi that trades freely in Hong Kong and other centres outside mainland China. Onshore USD/CNY is held within a daily band around a fixing set by the People's Bank of China each morning, so the offshore rate is where global markets express their view on the currency, and the gap between CNH and CNY is itself a signal of pressure. The pair reacts to the daily fix, Chinese activity and trade data, US-China trade and tariff headlines and the general strength of the dollar. Yuan trading has grown to make USD/CNY one of the most traded pairs worldwide. Activity is concentrated in the Asian session. On ForexR you can follow the live USD/CNH rate, read daily pivot points, gauge the usually contained range with ATR and confirm trend on the multi-timeframe chart. CNY is the onshore yuan, which the PBoC keeps within a daily trading band around a morning fixing. CNH is the offshore yuan traded freely in Hong Kong and elsewhere. They usually track closely, but CNH moves first on news.
The PBoC daily fixing, Chinese growth and trade data, US-China tariff and trade headlines, US yields and the broad dollar trend. Policy signals from Beijing can shift the pair even without a data release.
The Asian session, roughly 01:00-09:00 UTC, when the fix is published at 01:15 UTC and Chinese data is released. Liquidity is thinner during New York hours.
