One third of the trade closes at each target, and the stop moves to the entry after target 1.
This is a mechanical short signal on the Nasdaq 100 (US100), generated by a 5-minute EMA 9/21 scalping strategy. The rule sells at market when the 9 EMA crosses below the 21 EMA while price remains below the 200 EMA. Tested over a year, this specific rule lost an average of 0.04R per trade on the Nasdaq. The broader trend is down, but the index is bouncing today, up 2%, with the daily RSI deeply oversold at 25.4. The stop at 27174.7 is placed 1.5 ATR away, just above the daily pivot of 27162.1, marking the level where the immediate bearish momentum would be invalidated.
ChartPrice structure on the chart: trend, levels, volatility.
The most common scalping setup: on 5-minute bars, buy at market when the 9 EMA crosses above the 21 EMA while price is above the 200 EMA, and sell on the mirror image. London and New York hours only (07:00 to 20:00 UTC, weekdays), at most six a day per instrument. Stop 1.5 ATR (5-minute), targets 1R, 2R and 3R; the rest closes when the EMAs cross back, or after two hours.
Caveat: One year only (the price feed keeps a year of 5-minute bars): -0.03R per trade over 1,814 trades, gold -0.02R, Nasdaq 100 -0.04R. On EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY and Bitcoin the same rule lost 0.17 to 0.20R a trade, because a 5-minute stop is only a few spreads wide, so it is not run there; that choice was made on the same data.
The idea, explained: Forex scalping
The trade expected a short continuation based on a mechanical 5-minute EMA 9/21 crossover. Instead, price immediately reversed upward and stopped the trade out within nine minutes.

Filled at 27041.8 at 15:41 UTC, the trade briefly moved in favor to 26987.1 (0.393 R) during the entry bar. Price then reversed sharply in the 15:45 UTC bar, climbing to a close of 27134.5. In the 15:50 UTC bar, bullish momentum continued to a high of 27191.4, triggering the stop loss at 27174.7 and closing the position.
The entry relied on short-term bearish momentum remaining below the daily pivot of 27162.1. By the time of the loss, price had surged past this pivot to 27191.4, directly invalidating the bearish thesis as anticipated by the stop placement.
Lesson: Taking mechanical short scalps when the daily RSI is deeply oversold and the intraday market is already bouncing strongly carries a higher risk of sudden bullish reversals.
