One third of the trade closes at each target, and the stop moves to the entry after target 1.
This is a mechanical short trade on USD/CAD generated by a Bollinger Band fade strategy. The rule sells at market on the 1-hour chart when the price closes above the upper band (1.4098) with the RSI above 70 (currently 80.5). Backtesting shows this strategy has historically lost money across major pairs. The trade fights strong intraday bullish momentum, with today's range already at 164% of the daily average. However, the entry sits near R3 resistance at 1.41272. The trade idea is invalidated if the surge continues and hits the stop loss at 1.41324, just above R3.

Bollinger Band strategies are the second most starred family in our Pine library (99 scripts, 6,061 stars; for example Bollinger Bands Winner). On 1-hour bars, buy at market when price closes below the lower band (20, 2) with RSI 14 under 30, and sell when it closes above the upper band with RSI over 70. Stop 1.5 ATR, targets 1R, 2R and 3R; the rest closes back at the middle band.
Caveat: Average per trade across the 11 instruments tested (7 FX majors, gold, silver, Bitcoin, Ether), costs included. Lost in every year on average; positive on only 2 of 11 instruments (AUD/USD +0.04R). Not tested on WTI or the Nasdaq 100.
The idea, explained: Bollinger Bands
The trade expected USDCAD to revert from the upper Bollinger Band after printing overbought RSI conditions. Instead, extreme bullish momentum persisted, pushing the price through resistance to hit the stop loss.
This is a mechanical short trade on USD/CAD generated by a Bollinger Band fade strategy. Filled at 1.41086 at 14:01, the price initially rose to 1.4125 at 14:20 before reversing in the trade's favour. It dropped to a low of 1.40893 by 15:15, reaching a best excursion of +0.78R and missing the first target at 1.40888 by less than a pip. From there, the pair climbed steadily, breaking above the R3 resistance level to trigger the stop loss at 1.41324 at 18:28.
The mechanical signal attempted to fade a strong intraday trend near R3 resistance, explicitly acknowledging the risk of doing so. This risk materialized as the bullish surge continued unabated, breaking above R3 to invalidate the trade and trigger the stop loss.
Lesson: Fading extreme directional momentum based purely on overbought indicators often leads to losses, especially when the daily range already significantly exceeds its historical average.

The strategy has a negative tested record, and fading today's strong bullish momentum (164% of average true range) carries significant risk.
Not enough closed signals scored 30-39 yet (16 of 20 needed), so there is no measured hit rate to show.
