One third of the trade closes at each target, and the stop moves to the entry after target 1.
This is a mechanical signal from the "Post-news drift" strategy, which buys USD/JPY following a bullish 15-minute candle during the Nonfarm Payrolls release. The rule buys at 158.463 with a stop at the candle's low of 158.254. Historical testing shows this rule has a negative track record on this pair. The current context also poses challenges: the daily range has already stretched to 142% of its average, increasing the risk of exhaustion. Furthermore, the stop loss sits just above the R1 support at 158.239, leaving the trade exposed to a routine pullback before any further upside.

Trade the first reaction. When the 15-minute candle that contains a high-impact data release closes, buy at market if it closed up and sell if it closed down, with the stop at the other end of that candle (at least half an ATR away). Targets 1R, 2R and 3R; trades close after six hours at most.
Caveat: -0.08R per trade over 599 trades in the last year (gold +0.02R, EUR/USD -0.06R, USD/JPY -0.07R, Nasdaq 100 -0.23R). Our 2023-2026 study found the same rule positive in every year on gold for US jobs and Fed days only (14-18 trades a year), but negative when all release types were included.
The idea, explained: Trading the news
The trade anticipated a bullish continuation following a strong 15-minute candle driven by the Nonfarm Payrolls release. Instead, momentum immediately stalled and price drifted lower into a standard pullback.

Filled at 158.452 at 13:46 UTC, the trade experienced zero favorable excursion. Price immediately began to drift lower, falling to 158.333 by the 13:50 bar. A minor bounce reached 158.442 during the 14:00 bar, but sellers quickly regained control. The decline continued into the 14:05 bar, dropping to a low of 158.243 and hitting the stop loss at 158.254 at 14:06 UTC.
The entry reason explicitly cautioned that the daily range was overextended at 142% of its average and the stop was vulnerable resting above R1 (158.239). These warnings were completely validated, as the exhausted market suffered a routine pullback that swept the poorly protected stop.
Lesson: Avoid entering momentum continuation setups when the daily range is severely overextended and the mechanical stop loss rests just ahead of logical structural support.
