Why this trade

This is a short on the Nasdaq 100 (US100) based on a mechanical 5-minute scalping rule. The signal fired when the 5-minute 9 EMA crossed below the 21 EMA while both were below the 200 EMA. The strategy uses a tight 1.5 ATR stop, which is currently 62.8 points. However, the index is experiencing extreme volatility with a daily ATR of 735 points, making whipsaws highly likely, especially heading into the New York open. The tested record for this strategy on the Nasdaq is negative. The trade is invalidated if price hits the stop loss at 27011.8.

About the strategy: EMA 9/21 scalper

The most common scalping setup: on 5-minute bars, buy at market when the 9 EMA crosses above the 21 EMA while price is above the 200 EMA, and sell on the mirror image. London and New York hours only (07:00 to 20:00 UTC, weekdays), at most six a day per instrument. Stop 1.5 ATR (5-minute), targets 1R, 2R and 3R; the rest closes when the EMAs cross back, or after two hours.

Caveat: One year only (the price feed keeps a year of 5-minute bars): -0.03R per trade over 1,814 trades, gold -0.02R, Nasdaq 100 -0.04R. On EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY and Bitcoin the same rule lost 0.17 to 0.20R a trade, because a 5-minute stop is only a few spreads wide, so it is not run there; that choice was made on the same data.

Why it lost, against why it was taken AI review

The trade expected a short continuation on the US100 following a mechanical 5-minute moving average crossover strategy. Instead, price immediately reversed against the position and chopped higher before stopping out.

The reason it was taken

What happened

The short position was filled at 26940.2 at 11:01 UTC and generated zero favorable excursion (0R). Over the next twenty minutes, price action chopped upward in five-minute intervals. During the 11:20 UTC bar, a sudden bullish surge pushed the index to a high of 27026.9, triggering the 27011.8 stop loss at 11:22 UTC for a -1.14R result.

The entry reason did not hold

The mechanical entry conditions were met at the signal time, but the extreme daily volatility noted in the setup quickly overwhelmed the 5-minute structure. The anticipated whipsaw action materialized exactly as warned, pushing price through the tight 1.5 ATR stop.

Lesson: Employing tight timeframe scalping strategies during periods of extreme market volatility drastically increases the probability of premature whipsaw losses.
